Do you know how to pack for air travel? Are you packing too many clothes? Are you finding yourself needing to pay for your extra luggage? Many people are complaining about the fees that airlines are charging for checked baggage. Gone are the days of checking two pieces of luggage of any weight or size.
When you are packing for work or pleasure, be reasonable. If you are going to have access to washing machines or dry cleaning services, plan to use them. It you are going on a business trip ask the hotel, preferably before you book your room, if they have a steamer you can use to steam your business clothes, if not ask if there is a service available to do that. As soon as you get to your destination call on this service. Get everything steamed or ironed that you need for your meetings etc. If you are going on a vacation, do the same. Plan on purchasing this service before you even leave home. Most casual clothes can simply be ironed in the room, but make sure that you ask for the tools to do that when booking.
How much do you really need to take? Most of us travel with a laptop, but you can still take a carryon suitcase. If you are going to be gone a week for vacation, packing light is the best. Roll up your clothes such as underwear, pajamas, socks, and t-shirts and place them in the empty corners of your suitcase. Fold any clothing that will wrinkle easily. If you are going on a business trip, plan to wear your suit on the flight. It will get less wrinkled and leaves more room for extra shirts in your suit case. Sometimes when it comes to business travel a checked piece of luggage cannot be avoided, depending of course on how long you will be gone. However work wear is often times more casual then in the past and t-shirts under sport coats is considered appropriate. Plan for a spill on your shirt and pack an extra one.
Commonly travelers pack too many shoes. Take a comfortable walking shoe that looks nice and something for dress or sandals. Gone are the days of white tennis shoes, so shop for something that looks a little dressier with a little more style. If the hotel has blow driers, leave yours at home.
Keep in mind as you are packing things that people commonly shop when they are away from home, bring less so you can pack your new things. If you are a big shopper, plan to ship home anything that doesn't fit in your carry on. Chances are, it will beat you home. Keep in mind that checked baggage is around $20.00 for fifty pounds. Sometimes it's just best to pay the airline and take it home with you.
Don't make this travel fee a big deal. If you pack well, you'll seldom need to pay it.
